Tipster: Lomography Golden Rule #10 – Don’t Worry About Any Rules

1

When we are new to photography it is important to learn a few technical things in order to take better pictures. Understanding the exposure triangle, rule of thirds and the sunny16 method will provide a solid foundation and help us capture the images we desire. However, it is also important to remember that rules are not set in stone and can be broken. As Lomography Golden Rule #10 states – Don’t worry about any rules.

Sometimes, it can be liberating to forget what we have learned and experiment freely. If you are unsure where to start, here are a few tips to help you unleash your creativity and express yourself without limitations.

Shoot with Freedom

They say the best camera is the camera you have on you. Though some cameras were meant for certain events and purposes, there's nothing stopping you from using them in a new environment. Whether you want to use medium format cameras like the LC-A 120 or Lomo Lubitel 166+ for a night out with friends, a compact point-and-shoot like the LomoApparat for a wedding day, or even the Lomo'Instant Wide for creative portraits, the power is in your hands!

Take Film Outside Its Comfort Zone

We all know that certain film stocks are ideal for certain lighting, moods, and events due to their speed and other attributes. Well, time to throw all of that out of the window and see how these film stocks can fare in uncharted territory. LomoChrome Metropolis was built for the urban jungle but that shouldn't stop you from trying it out away from the hustle and bustle of the city! As it gets darker try out film stocks that are supposed to be meant for the light such as Fantôme Kino B&W ISO 8 or Color Negative ISO 100 where the longer exposure times can give you shots you've never seen before. Sick of dry land? Bring your film underwater with the Simple Use Underwater Case or Lomo Krab Underwater Housing and see how the film translates under the deep blue sea.

Change the Colors of the World

Change your reality by cross-processing your film or using our color-shifting LomoChrome films that flip what you know upside down! Lomographers love to develop their slide films via the C-41 process in order to get wild color shifts and outlandish hues. And our LomoChrome Turquoise, and LomoChrome Purple films create their own worlds for you to capture by toppling over the conventional colors and bringing new versions for you to shoot. Don't be afraid to change the ocean blues to orange or the mountains to purple, and give yourself a new perspective.

No Need to Be Sharp

Just because a photo is not sharp doesn't mean it's a failed photo. The level of sharpness is a personal preference, as soft and blurry photos are just as pleasing and eye-catching. Lenses like our Petzval, Daguerreotype Achromat and our latest offering the Nour Triplet V allow the user to be more purposeful when it comes to finding their ideal level of sharpness and softness. This creates unique effects which can unlock a new layer of creativity for photographers.

Everything and Anything Goes

It doesn't matter how abstract, crazy, or simple the result is, what's important is that you enjoy the journey and outcome of capturing images on film. If you want to experiment with techniques like film soups, multiple exposures, or film swaps, there shouldn't be anyone to tell you otherwise. Alternatively, if you prefer to take sharp and technically perfect street shots and portraits, that's fine too. There's room for all types of analogue photography, and it's an exciting time to be part of this wonderful art form.
