馬來西亞國家動物園在 1963 年正式開放給大眾。動物園裡展出大約 400 種馬來西亞和異國的哺乳動物，爬行動物和鳥類。在這當中，多數是魚類和鳥類。約有一百種是哺乳動物和爬行動物。
國家動物園坐落在離吉隆坡市中心大約 13 公里遠的 Setapak 。裡頭的「東姑阿都拉曼水族館」是一個非常受歡迎的景點。
國家動物園裡展示超過 80 種水生動物物種，包括海洋和淡水及無脊椎動物。遊客們被要求不許給動物餵食，通過這麼一個有趣的通告板：「一隻手持香蕉的手，和一隻大象，上面被狠狠地劃上了一個叉。」距離我上次到訪國家動物園已經有一段歲月，當時我還只是個 9-10 歲的小朋友。事隔 15 年後再次和三五成群好友到訪，確實又是另一番滋味的新體驗！
